Hershey Can’t Solve Bruins

BY DON SCOTT

Beck Malenstyn scored the only goal for the Hershey Bears (41-17-5-4) on Wednesday in their 3-1 loss to the Providence Bruins (41-16-8-2) at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. The defeat ended Hershey’s season-high nine-game (7-0-0-2) point streak.

The loss also dropped the Bears behind Providence by one point for the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference lead.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead 3:33 into the first period on a deflection goal by Shane Bowers, who then scored again at 13:55 of the middle frame to give the Bruins a 2-0 edge.

The Bears got on the board at 3:19 of the third period when Malenstyn slipped the puck between the pads of goalie Kyle Keyser. The goal was initially waved off, but the video review overturned the decision and awarded Malenstyn his seventh of the season, with assists credited to Riley Sutter and Shane Gersich.

Vinni Lettieri iced the game with an empty-net goal for Providence at 19:24.

Shots finished 30-29 in favor of the Bruins. The Bears were 0-for-2 on the power play; the Bruins finished 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Hershey continues its road trip with a stop in Springfield on Friday, April 7 at 7:05 p.m. and then will host the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Giant Center.

Bears Notes:

Connor McMichael’s 10-game point streak (4g, 6a), and a nine-game point streak on the road (3g, 6a) ended.

Gabriel Carlsson played in his 200th career AHL game. He is tied for the lead among Eastern Conference defensemen with a plus/minus of +24.

The Bears have the only goaltending duo in the AHL with at least 18 wins each, as Zach Fucale is tied for seventh in wins with 20, and Hunter Shepard is tied for 12th with 18.

Defenseman Bobby Nardella leads Hershey’s blue line in scoring this season with 25 points (5g, 20a) in 56 games. Following his Sunday game at Cleveland he leads Hershey’s defense with four multi-point outings and the Bears have gone 4-0-0-0 in those matches. Hershey has also posted a record of 17-1-3-0 when he scores.
