Cougars Chomping at Bit for Another Postseason Run

BY JEFF FALK

The Palmyra field hockey team rarely looks behind. And it’s sort of a shame, because if the Cougars did they would see they enjoyed an outstanding 2012 regular season.

On Thursday at Hershey High School, Palmyra concluded the regular-season portion of its schedule with a 2-1 triumph over the rival Trojans. After falling behind early in the first half, the Cougars netted a goal just before halftime and one in the closing minutes to win it.

Palmyra’s second victory over Hershey this season moved it to 16-2 overall. The Cougars finished second in the Keystone Division of the Mid-Penn Conference, to mighty Lower Dauphin, the only squad to beat Palmyra this season.

Hershey scored six minutes into the regular-season finale, but Amber Bailey tied it for the Cougars with an unassisted tally 4:51 before the break. After the rivals battled through most of the second half, Bailey won it for Palmyra by converting a feed from Mary Albus with 4:31 to go.

Palmyra is the defending District Three Class AA champions and advanced to last season’s final four of the Class AA PIAA tournament. The Cougars appeared poised for a similar postseason stay this year.
