ANNVILLE – The Annville-Cleona Boys’ Basketball hosted Columbia on Friday night, but it was the Crimson Tide who rolled past the Dutchmen, 59-50. The Tide played a brilliant second half, where they ran away with the contest by reeling off 33 points over the final two quarters.
Columbia’s Luiz Cruz accounted for 11 second-half points before finishing with a game-high of 17. Cruz’ teammate, Michael Poole, posted a 14-point effort while coming through with the turning point of the game.
Poole sprinted out of the gate and accounted for six third quarter points, including consecutive hook shots that increased Columbia’s lead to five. From that point on, the Tide controlled the tempo while making it a long and frustrating night for the Dutchmen.
Annville-Cleona’s brother-duo of Andrew and Adam Long combined for 24 points, as Andrew led the Dutchmen with 14 while Adam tallied 10. However, Annville’s second half shot selection proved to be its downfall, as several missed opportunities came back to bite the home team.
The result left Annville-Cleona 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in Section Five of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Columbia moved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the section.
Foul trouble was another issue for Annville and the Tide fed off that, capitalizing on 23 of its 31 chances from the line. Cruz hit five of his seven attempts, Poole went a perfect eight-for-eight and Kerry Glover, who added 10 points, converted eight free throws as well.
“We have to be consistent and play with energy,” said Annville-Cleona head coach, Jason Coletti. “As soon as one or two plays don’t go our way, we get deflated and we have to stop that because there’s still a lot of basketball left.”
Despite the disappointing result, Coletti showed plenty of praise for Caden Horning, who came off the bench and provided the Dutchmen with eight points. Horning had his share of minutes and is expected to receive more as the season continues.
“We’ll have a different starting lineup for our next game and Caden will be one of the starters, because you can’t do the same stuff and expect different results,” Coletti later added.
Coletti’s experiment will be put to the test this Monday night, when the Dutchmen welcome the Braves of Pequea Valley.
