EPHRATA – Here’s the thing with close, extended families: they’re usually comprised of strong individuals with varying interests.

But no matter what they do or how far away they go, sons never lose their sense of belonging. And when they do come home, they’re always welcomed with open arms.

On a muggy Monday night at Ephrata’s War Memorial, during the fourth day of the eight-team, double-elimination Region Four baseball tournament, Campbelltown tallied a critical 5-2 triumph over Paxton, thanks to a boost from the return of prodigal son Brian Coburn. Coburn went the distance on a six-hitter, while C-town played a patient, opportunistic brand of offense in his support.

A day removed from his return from a church youth camp, Coburn, one of Post 831’s top players, was making his initial apperance in the Region Four tournament. But while Campbelltown went 2-1 without him, Coburn certainly made his presence felt against Paxton, the final undefeated team in the event.

With the result, Campbelltown, now 21-3 overall, moved to Tuesday’s final day of the tournament and guaranteed itself at least a third-place finish. But to win it, and capture the state playoff berth that goes with it, C-town would have to pull off the tall task of beating first host Ephrata at 5 p.m. and then Paxton again, at approximately 8 p.m.

At this point, Campbelltown, Ephrata and Paxton have all gone 3-1 in the regional tournament. Paxton, the champions out of Dauphin County, is now 21-4 on the summer.

Post 831 is expected to send southpaw Nick LaFoe to the mound against Ephrata. Campbelltown is now 2-0 in the tournament in its blue uniforms and 1-1 in its red ones.

“I just asked my boys, ‘Who was on the mound?’,” said Campbelltown head coach Tim Morgan. “Brian’s one of our best pitchers, and when he’s on, we only need to score one or two runs. What can I say? It was a shot in the arm having him back. We needed Brian tonight.”

“We’re like a family, a giant family,” said Coburn. “I don’t think anyone sticks out as a leader. We kind of lead as a team. But we’re really close.”

With Coburn on top of his game and the score tied at one, Campbelltown pieced together the eventual winning rally in the bottom of the fourth inning, employing a little small ball and putting pressure on Paxton’s defense. It all happend after two outs had been recorded, and with the bases empty.

Jake Wagner’s single was followed by three straight walks, to Thomas Zeigler, Jake Roe and Dylan Kepler. After Wagner scored on a throwing error to make it 2-1, Coburn followed with a run-scoring single to right and Kasey Shughard beat out an RBI infield hit.

An inning later, Campbelltown extended its lead to 5-1, on hot-hitting Austin Baal’s solo dinger to right.

“How about (Trevor) Binner?,” said Morgan of his clean-up hitter. “The last three games he’s gone deep to straight-away center. Baalie hit a rocket tonight. That’s good stuff. Other people contributed too. And look at our defense.”

“I was texting with the team the whole time,” said Coburn of his time away. “My parents came to the games. It stunk being away. But I knew they were capable of winning the games and I was rooting for them the whole time.

“It was amazing to hear they won the game last night (9-3 over Waynesboro),” added Coburn. “I was really excited to hear they were playing today and that I was getting the start on the mound.”

Coburn performed like he had never missed a beat.

From his 89 pitches, he struck out five and did not issue a free pass. After surrendering the Josh Dougher RBI that made it 5-2 in the top of the sixth, Coburn slammed the door by retiring the last five batters he faced.

“That’s how he loves to throw,” said Morgan of Coburn’s quick, hard working approach to throwing strikes. “He’s such a competitor. When he’s behind 3-1 in the count, I don’t have a problem with it. He throws strikes.”

“My approach is to throw the first pitch for a strike,” said Coburn. “To work down in the zone and work fast. I feel like the batter’s got to catch up to me on the mound.

“I just got back from vacation and I hadn’t thrown a baseball in a while,” continued Coburn. “I felt fresh. My arm felt great. All my pitches were doing what they were supposed to be doing.”

Campbelltown established a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first, following a lead-off walk to Coburn. Binner drove him home with a towering two-out double to center field.

But Paxton got that run back in the top of the second, as David Shroyer knocked in Nick Balint with a double.

“Everybody’s got a loss,” said Morgan of Ephrata and Paxton. “We’re all 3-1. But we have to play two games tomorrow.

“There’s 56 teams in the region and we’re going to be at least number three,” Morgan added. “That’s not bad.”
