It took them 58 years to get into it, now they can’t seem to get out of it.
The Lebanon Valley College footballers have qualified for the postseason again – for the third straight time to be exact. And this time Lebanon Valley will play the role of gracious host.
On Saturday at Arnold Field, LVC will welcome Saint Vincent’s University for the playing of the ECAC South-West Bowl. At the end of the past two regular-seasons, the Flying Dutchmen have gone 1-1 in postseason appearances.
Of course, the proliferation of NCAA post-season bowl games has served Lebanon Valley well.
The Flying Dutchmen will carry a 7-3 overall mark into the contest, thanks to Saturday’s 54-7 whipping of King’s College. Saint Vincent’s has won three straight and stands at 6-4.
Lebanon Valley had its way against the Monarchs pretty much all day. The Flying Dutchmen opened a 31-0 halftime lead on Senior Day, and everybody got a chance to play.
Senior tailback Ben Guiles opened the scoring for Lebanon Valley with a 58-yard touchdown run that made it 7-0 and made him the all-time leading rusher in program history. Guiles finished the afternoon with 140 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.
Fellow senior, quarterback Colt Zarilla set season-marks for passing yards and touchdowns with 285 yards and two scoring strikes. But with 5.5 sacks – an LVC record for a single game – and a safety, senior defensive end Cory Homer topped everyone.
The Lebanon Valley defense limited King’s College, which fell to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the Middle Atlantic Conference to just 169 yards of total offense and sacked it nine times.
LVC’s senior class is the first since 1963 to post four winning seasons in its careers.
