It’s kind of like hitting a brick wall at 50 miles an hour. It can stop you dead in your tracks.
On Tuesday night at, the Palmyra boys’ soccer team experienced the abruptness and finality of the PIAA Class AA playoffs. At Frank Banko Field in Bethlehem, the Cougars were unceremoniously shown the door by Morvian Academy, in a 5-1 season-ending defeat.
During 2011, the Cougars went 17-7, won the Keystone Divsion of the Mid-Penn Conference and finished second in District Three. Moravian Academy, the District 11 champ, improved to 21-1 on the year.
The contest marked Palmyra’s fifth straight appearance in the PIAA playoffs. The Cougars had reached the semifinals of the state playoffs in each of the last two campaigns.
Following Palmyra’s two-hour bus ride, the Lions literally needed just seconds to score and take a 1-0 lead. The Cougars fought back and netted the equalizer on a Zach Klein tally 14 minutes in, but after that it was pretty much all Moravian Academy.
The Lions took a 2-1 edge the locker room thanks to a goal 13 minutes before the break. Moravian Academy scored three times in the second 40 minutes of play.
