Tim Gingrich is back in the saddle in Palmyra. In many ways, it feels like he never left.
Gingrich, the most influential figure in Palmyra baseball during the modern era, has decided to return to lead the Cougars. This after a year hiatus and having former JV coach John Karavage fill his position.
Karavage resigned at the end of the 2013 season to take a similar coaching/teaching position at Milton Hershey school, after one year on the Palmyra bench. This spring the Cougars went 11-10 overall and qualified for the District Three Class AA tournament.
It was a similar scene in May of 2012, when Gingrich resigned following a season-ending loss to Northern York in districts.
“I still love it,” Gingrich told Lebanon Sports Buzz at that time. “I watch baseball all the time. I might not do it as much as I used to, but I’m still going to get out to games. I was a bat boy when I was three or four years old in Twilight (League). It’s (stepping aside) definitely going to be a life-changing thing.
“My wife could never understand,” Gingrich continued. “If you look at all the time you put into it, we figured it out one time and the salary was like a penny an hour. It wasn’t a job. It was something I liked to do.”
Gingrich, a graduate of Palmyra and a former star player for the Cougars, had headed the program for 17 years, going 225-136. As a coach, Gingrich has guided Palmyra to three district championships and the 1999 PIAA title.
