That mantra is never more relevant than it is in the postseason. And Palmyra certainly knows something about playoff field hockey.
On Tuesday afternoon at Hershey High School, the Cougars opened their 2011 postseason by edging Milton Hershey, 1-0. By all accounts, it wasn’t a Cougar masterpiece, by any stretch of the imagination.
The difference in the outcome was a goal from Kasey Hess, four minutes after halftime. Hess converted a feed from fellow 12th grader Anna Scipioni during a corner play.
With the win, Palmyra, the second seed in the Class AA tournament, moved to 13-6 overall and into Saturday’s 1 p.m. quarterfinal match with Biglerville at Penn Manor. Biglerville defeated Greencastle-Antrim 2-1 in its opening-round game.
Milton Hershey ended its campaign at 13-6-1.
The Cougars enjoyed the better of the play, most of the way. But despite more than 20 corner opportunities, the Palmyra defenese and netminder Nicole Burger were forced to endure a late-game push from the Spartans.
Because the top six finishers from District Three advance to the PIAA tournament, the win assured Palmyra at least two more games this season.
Palmyra has dropped only one Class AA opener in the last decade.
