Play well enough in enough events and you’re bound to win one once in a while. Or maybe it’s just that Chris Gebhard prefers match play.
Gebhard, the runner-up to Mike Schmidt, Jr. for Lebanon County’s 2013 Amateur Golfer of the Year, recently captured the individual title at the Lebanon County Amateur Match Play Championship, contested at the Lebanon Country Club on October 12 and 13. Gebhard defeated Jimmy Gardner 2&1 in the final match.
Gebhard, the number two seed who plays out of the Lebanon Country Club, had reached the championship match with a 5&4 triumph over Jesse Brown. The fourth-seeded Gardner defeated young gun Tyler Shank 4&3 in the semifinal of the upper half of the bracket.
Growing in popularity and status locally, the Lebanon County Amateur Match Play Championship is the newest of the Lebanon County Golf Association-sponsored events. The 16-player field is determined by a point system based on players’ performances in LCGA events during the summer.
Schmidt, the number-one seed and the winner of this summer’s Lebanon County Amateur and Lebanon County Better-Ball-of-Partners medal events, was upset in the second round of the two-day event by Shank. Gebhard had finished second to Schmidt at both the County Amateur and County Better-Ball.
