Sometimes we wonder where all the time goes. But time without baseball is slow time.
It’s been 30 years since our national pasttime was played on the youth level in the borough of Richland. And some would say it’s about time.
For the first time since the early 1980s, the small borough in the eastern part of Lebanon County is sponsoring a teener baseball team. Richland is the newest entrant in the Lebanon City-County teener baseball league.
Recently, the former diamond at the old Richland Carnival Grounds was revamped and re-dedicated under the name of Richard L. Weinhold Memorial Field. Taking place in the formal ceremonies dedicating the new field were Weinhold’s wife Shirley, son Kevin, Richland borough president Owen Landis, Neptune Fire Company president Colleen Marks and Richland head coach Larry Hartman.
Richard Weinhold, who passed away a few years back, was instrumental in the success of teener baseball in Richland in the 1970s. A mainstay in Richland for many years, Weinhold was a borough council member, an active member in the Neptune Fire company and the United Church of Christ, as well as other civic organizations.
The Richland Legion does sponsor a team in the Lebanon County American Legion Baseball League – ages 16-19 – but the team does not play its home games within the borough. The Richland american legion club calls Lyle Krall Field at Elco High School its home, and not all members of the team hail from Richland.
