Derek Fisher Has Taken Cavalier Approach to Baseball

 BY JEFF FALK

It was a better-best decision. But the way things have gone for Derek Fisher so far at the University of Virginia, there really can be no second-guessing.

Fisher, a 2011 graduate of Cedar Crest and a member of the Cavaliers’ Division One baseball team continues to impress.

After fighting through a nagging ankle injury earlier in the spring, the 6-3, 210-pound Fisher is hitting .321 with four home runs and 30 RBIs in 30 games for the Cavaliers this spring. And some of the bombs Fisher has hit have been of the tape-measure variety.

During his freshman campaign, Fisher, a native of Rexmont, competed in an NCAA Division One home run derby.

Currently, Virginia is 32-6 and ranked seventh in the country.

A smooth swinging five-tool player for Cedar Crest, Fisher was taken in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball first-year player entry draft right out of high school, but forwent millions of dollars to play Division One baseball in Charlottesville and earn a college education at Virginia.
