Three Local Squads Reside on Bubble of Sullivan Qualifying

BY JEFF FALK

For avid area golfers, competing in the W.B. Sullivan Better-Ball-of-Partners tournament is a must. But ask anyone who has ever played in it, and to a man, he will tell you that the experienced is enhanced expotentially by qualifying for the match-play championship flight.

On the heels of Thursday’s opening day of qualifying on the Lebanon Country Club’s par-72, 6,562-yard layout, three local duos find themselves on the cusp of making it to the championshp flight of the 67th edition of the prestigious event.

Leading local qualifying was the team of Bill Massar, Jr. and Jeff Hoke, a pair of former Lebanon County amateur champions. Massar and Hoke carded a two-under par score of 70 on Thursday, one which featured a three-under par front-nine and a one-over par back nine.

The remainder of the 96-plus qualifiers will engage in medal play in four different flights.

017In light of their 71s on Thursday, two other local duos will likely need help making the championship flight. Reigning Lebanon County amateur champion Tony Deraco and his partner, Greg Behney, fired a 33-38-71, while Jesse Brown and Cody Kersey counted a 36-35-71.

Also of local note, Lebanon Country Club members John DiGiacomo and Steve Allwein scored a 35-40-75.

Opening matches in the championship flight will tee it up at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, while the final match is slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
