SOUTH LEBANON – As postseason play approaches, one team is sitting in a comfortable position while the other is traveling a long and winding road. That was apparent during last night’s Section One matchup between Cedar Crest and Hempfield.

The Lady Falcons are still alive for districts, but the situation dimmed following a 34-17 defeat to the Black Knights. Crest dropped its fourth in a row, while Hempfield won its eighth straight before improving its league record to 10-0.

“I don’t know how you come back from something like that to be honest with you,” said Cedar Crest head coach Jim Donmoyer. “All year, we’ve been playing three good quarters and one bad quarter and that was four quarters of bad, there’s no other way to put it.”

Cedar Crest kept it close in the early going, but was held scoreless over the final 4:04 of the opening period. Not only that, but the Falcons were shut out in the second quarter and remained scoreless until junior forward, Sarah Laney, hit a third-quarter layup.

“When a team plays good defense and gets up in you, they’re physical and they’re pushing around a little bit,” Donmoyer said. “It causes you to take a lot of outside jump shots, but you can’t keep shooting them time and time again if they don’t go in.”

“You gotta handle the ball, you gotta make passes and you gotta make shots and I can’t do anything about any of that, they gotta do it and when you don’t do it, you score 17 points,” added Donmoyer.

Meanwhile, Hempfield ran off 16 unanswered points during that same stretch and the run was highlighted by a pair of buzzer-beaters. Freshman guard, Autumn Cook, nailed a jumper at the first-quarter horn, while senior guard Lauren Riggs drained a half-ending three.

The second half saw Lady Knights’ junior guard, Jessica Weinoldt, tally seven of her game-high 10 points. Weinoldt’s stat line also included a game-high four field goal conversions, along with a pair of foul shots.

Hempfield’s senior forward, Lindsey Durkota, inked five of her seven points during the games’ final 16 minutes. Durkota also finished as the Knights’ most effective free throw shooter, going three for four in that category.

Laney and fellow Cedar Crest junior Reese Glover both led the Falcons in scoring with six points apiece. Laney and Glover finished with identical numbers across the board as each hit a pair of field goals, while going two for four from the free throw line.

“I only have one rule and my one rule is to compete and play hard, that’s all I ask them to do,” Donmoyer said. “If I know they played as hard as they could, they did the best they could and they gave it a fighting chance, I don’t have a problem.”

With three regular season games remaining, all in-league road encounters, Crest has to do more than just compete, it has to win out in order to have a shot at districts. The Falcons take that first step this Tuesday night at Penn Manor.

Hempfield takes on Manheim Township in its next in-league game, which also takes place Tuesday night. In the meantime though, the Lady Knights’ focus is on tonight’s Keystone Cup meeting at Lower Dauphin High School, where they face Governor Mifflin.
