SHIPPENSBURG – Workouts lay the groundwork for it.

Training revolves around it.

Competition gears up to it.

For some, it’s a season-long process. For others, it’s an even longer journey.

But in no other scholastic sport is peaking more important – more sought after and elusive – than in track and field.

IMG_0477On Saturday at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium, during the conclusion of the District Three Track and Field Championships, Lebanon County student-athletes put forth their best efforts at the right time. Those outstanding local performances produced gold medals in seven different events, a bushel full of other metallic-colored medals and runner-up showings for the Cedar Crest boys’ team in Class AAA and the the Annville-Cleona girls in Class AA.

“Peaking means coming to your fullest at the right time,” said Cedar Crest senior speedster Denzel Pierre, who took home a gold medal, a silver and a bronze. “You don’t want to plateau during the regular season. Peaking means getting consistently faster, and performing workouts that make you faster. Right now, you want to be riding a wave of success. My times are getting faster and faster. I didn’t peak yet. We’ll see next week (at the PIAA meet).”

IMG_0370“It means being able to stay consistent,” said Lebanon junior Erin Winters, who was seeking new heights in the pole vault. “We thought I peaked last year. It means pretty much doing the best you can each meet. I just want to keep doing well. Thirteen feet would be awesome. That would be my main goal for next year. But if it would happen this year, that would be great.”

“Peaking is basically running to make sure your best times come at the right time, at states,” said Palmyra distance runner Miranda Salvo. “You want to be peaking at districts, and then at states. I think we’re (and teammates Maria Tukis, Katie Dembrowski and Jess Dembrowski) in the ballpark. It’s hard to believe there’s a week of track left. I think when we get in with faster teams it’ll  cause us to peak. Everyone’s going to be in the mix next week, and I think it will help us get our fastest times.”

“With all of my trials, this was as good as I can do,” said Annville-Cleona freshman phenom Regan Hess. “Yeah, this would be my peaking point. I pretty much take it as it comes every meet. I want to peak at every meet.”

IMG_0514For Hess, her best was good enough for a pair of gold medals and a couple of silvers.

With her time of 12.56 in the finals of the Class AA 100-meter dash, Hess nudged Rachel Pitman of Bishop McDevitt by .26 of a second. Hess ran second to Nicole Leonzo of Harrisburg Christian in the 200-meter dash by .32 of a click.

“It’s good for a freshmen, doing that and having three years to improve,” said Hess, who will compete in her four events at next weekend’s PIAA Track and Field Championships, back at Seth Grove Stadium. “I pretty much take them all the same. Each event I go 100 percent.”

IMG_0312With Hess anchoring the all freshmen/sophomore foursome of Tori Malloy, Timeshah Clark and Veronica Merone, Annville-Cleona also copped the runner-up trophy in the Class AA 400-meter relay. On Friday afternoon, Hess leapt 18-0.75 to take top honors in the long jump.

“That’s what we’re going for,” said Hess of a Class AA team title that went to Boiling Springs by 13 points. “Hopefully we can grasp it. That’s been our goal this season.

“It’s (her focus) pretty much 50-50 (for the team and individually),” added Hess. “I run to get points for the team. I want to pull this off for the team.”

IMG_0380Hess’ showing and teammates Avree Wright’s gold medal in the shot put and Sydni Peiffer’s first-place effort in the high jump had the Little Dutchmen thinking Class AA team championship. Annville-Cleona also scored valuable team points with Samantha Becker taking bronze in the pole vault.

Salvo ran the lead-off leg of Palmyra’s golden 3200-meter relay team that clocked a 9:17.57. Three-fourths of that squad – Salvo, Tukis and K. Dembrowski – will be looking to repeat as Class AAA state champions next weekend.

“It’s a possibility,” said Salvo, who was also the runner-up  in the 3200-meter run. “Now we just want to focus on improving  our time. I just want to enjoy it because I’ll never get a chance to compete with such a great group of girls again.”

Tukis, J. Dembrowski, Salvo and K. Dembrowski were also third in the 1600-meter relay.

IMG_0352Winters’ winning vault of 12-0 in the Class AAA pole had onlookers wondering about the last time a Lebanon Cedar copped a medal of any sort at the state meet.

“I hope so,” said Winters with a smile. “I don’t know what the competition is going to be like at this point. I guess I’ll find out. I never expected to come this far this year.

“I was really shaky because of adrenalin,” continued Winters. “And now I can relax. I just wanted to do as well as I can.”

IMG_0444Cedar Crest junior Shanna Sweigart claimed the bronze medal in the Class AAA shot put, as did Falcon teammate Katie Gable in the long jump.

Pierre more than made up for minor disappointments in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with an electrifying anchor leg in the Class AAA 400-meter dash. By running down closers from Carlisle and Reading, Pierre set off a wild celebration with teammates Peter Groff, Jared Brandt and Damon Edwards, as they were clocked in a sizzling 42.88.

In between, Pierre was second in the 100 by .24 of a second and third in the 200.

IMG_0290“I wanted to get first in the 100, but the four-by-one was my race,” said Pierre. “There, I’m running for the team. I saw those two guys ahead of me and I thought to myself, ‘I’ve got to get it’. And then there were all smiles at the finish line. The four-by-one is my favorite event in track and field.

“I really wanted the 100 and I got off to a good start,” Pierre added. “But towards the middle of the race, my legs weren’t turning over as fast as I wanted. I was right there, but he’s (Daniel Boone’s Xavier Smith) a great racer.”

The other relays didn’t go quite as well for the Falcons.

Cedar Crest’s top-seeded quartet of Jared Glosser, Jordan Cruise, Jesse Cruise and Jarrod Cruise finished third to Carlisle and Central Dauphin in the 3200-relay. The Falcons’ foursome of Brandon Henriquez, Jairol Candelario, Jarrod Cruise and Peter Groff was third in the 4-by-4 relay, to winner Central Dauphin East and the runner-up Lebanon High squad of Omel Francois, Derin Klick, Ethan Arnold-Paine and Jeronimo Rodriguez.

IMG_0506But Jarrod Cruise did find some consolation in a strong runner-up effort in the Class AAA 800.

Northern Lebanon’s Derek DiAngelis and Cedar Crest’s Daniel Neiswender finished two-three in Friday’s Class AAA pole vault competition. Annville-Cleona’s Jon Zechman came in third in the Class AA 300-hurdle event.
