Lancaster-Lebanon Girls’ Tennis World Belongs to Shaak

BY JEFF FALK

Maddie Shaak proved that the Lancaster-Lebanon girls’ tennis coaches know what they are talking about.

Shaak recently was named the league’s girls’ tennis player of the year by the circuit’s coaches. Then on Tuesday, Shaak backed up their claim.

At Conestoga Valley, Shaak, a senior from Elco, captured the L-L’s girls’ tennis championship, in convincing fashion. Shaak dropped only one game in blasting Elizabeth Veronis of Lebanon Catholic 6-0, 6-1 in the finals match.

It was a bit of redemption for Shaak, who had advanced to the finals of the league tournament in each of the last three seasons, but went home empty handed. It also marked a full return from a knee injury suffered during the off-season.

Shaak established her dominance over Veronis by winning the first nine games of the championship match.

Shaak also teamed with fellow Raider Kristi Fidler to win their second straight Class AA doubles title. Shaak and Fidler, the reigning District Three Class AA doubles champion, downed the Lancaster Catholic duo of Veronis and Julia Davis, 6-2, 6-2, in the title match.

But those weren’t the only championships garnered by Lebanon Countians at the recent event. Cedar Crest’s Madison Fortna and Jolie Zinn captured the Flight Two doubles final with an 8-7 (8-6) triumph, while Falcon teammates Andrea Smith and Rachel Smith were victorious in the Flight Three doubles draw by an 8-4 count.
