Hershey’s Road Difficulties Deepen

BY DON SCOTT

On Wednesday night, the Hershey Bears remained winless at the PPL Center this season, as they dropped their sixth road game in a road, 2-1 in its sixth road loss to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Mike Vecchione scored Hershey’s only goal at 11:17 of the first period, sending a rebound of Brett Leason’s shot past Phantoms goaltender Pat Nagle for his sixth assist of the season.

In the third period, the Phantoms played come-from-behind hockey for the win in their effort to make the playoffs.

Alex Kile tied the score with an unassisted goal following a defensive zone turnover at 7:09. At 11:29, Maksim Sushko scored the game-winning goal after a video review showed the net was knocked off behind Pheonix Copley and the puck crossed the goal line.

Final shots on goal were 38-22 Phantoms. Hershey’s special teams finished 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

Hershey remains on the road Friday against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Bears Notes:

Goaltender Copley moved into seventh place on Hershey’s all-time games played list with 161, six less than Rollie Boutin. Number five is Frederic Cassivi at 246.

Hershey entered the game in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a .543 points percentage and a magic number of seven to clinch a playoff berth. The top six teams in the Atlantic Division make the 2022 Calder Cup playoffs.
