The Belleville Senators took a 1-0 lead 4:56 into Friday’s game, but the visiting Hershey Bears countered with five consecutive goals, that included three in the space of 66 seconds in the middle session, to claim a 5-1 AHL victory.
Jordan Murray beat Pheonix Copley for Belleville’s only goal, then kicked out the remaining 31 shots. Midway through the period, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby pulled the Bears even with his third goal of the Canadian road trip, on a setup by Brian Pinho.
Mike Sgarbossa started the second-period assault with what became the game-winner, when he deflected a Christian Djoos shot home for his fourth goal of the season.
That was followed by Philippe Maillet forcing a turnover in the offensive zone and feeding Liam O’Brien at the 14:43 mark. Djoos picked up another helper when Beck Malenstyn ripped a shot past Senators goaltender Marcus Hogberg at 15:34, and 15 seconds later, Steve Whitney nailed his first goal of the season on a wraparound pass from Sgarbossa.
The Bears finished the game 0-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Hershey returns to action Saturday to conclude their three-game Canadian road swing, with a stop in Laval against the Rocket.
