From a competitive standpoint, it’s really all a coach can ask: For a team to put itself in position to win a championship.
On Wednesday after school, the Cedar Crest boys’ tennis team put itself in position to play for a rare Lancaster-Lebanon Section One title by defeating Hempfield 5-2. Spearheaded by the sophomore-senior combo of Weston Fortna and Steven Kurban, the Falcons won four of the five singles’ matches to clinch the victory.
With the victory, Cedar Crest stayed unbeaten on the spring, improving to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in Section One of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. In Thursday’s season finale, the Falcons will meet the only other undefeated team in the section – Manheim Township – for the Section One championship.
As they have much of the year, Fortna and Clark set the tone for the Falcons by copping their number one and number two singles matches, respectively. Fortna disposed of Hempfield’s Andrew Clark, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, while Kurban took care of Chase Pipkin, 7-5, 6-4.
Fortna and Kurban also teamed to upend the Black Knight duo of Clark and Charlie Raffensberger, 8-6 at number one doubles.
In addition, Cedar Crest received a key triumph at number three singles from Michael Andrews, who outlasted Mike Brookhart, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 10-5. At number four singles, Falcon Ryan Zinn defeated T.J. Reno, 6-1, 6-4.
