Hershey goaltender Logan Thompson stopped 18 of 19 shots, but the Bears dropped a 2-0 road decision Friday night to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, in the opener of the Bears’ three-game pre-season schedule.
Following a scoreless opening period, the Penguins needed just 10 seconds into a power play to take a 1-0 lead when Sam Lafferty beat a screened Thompson.
Hershey had several chances against Penguins goaltender Emil Larmi but he kicked out all 28 shots he faced. Larmi stopped Brett Leason from point- blank range in the first period and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby late in the game to maintain his shutout.
With three minutes to play, Joe Snively hit the post to put the Bears within inches of an equalizer.
An empty net tally by Joseph Blandisi with 43 seconds remaining closed out the scoring.
The Bears finished the night 3-for-4 on the penalty kill and 0-for-6 on the power play.
The two teams will meet Saturday at Giant Center at 7 p.m.
